Floating ideas

I really want to make a piece of art using one of my favorite quotes by Martin Luther King Jr.

“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important.”

I’m not sure how yet, but I am excited about the ideas I got floating around. I have also finally finished the last panel of another picture I was working on. I still need to put some red behind the yellow and blue panels but I totally love them so far. (That’s why there is a faint circle around the peace sign.) I want to paint the sides black but I tend to get lazy at that point. I’m sure one day I’ll be on a good one and bust them all out.

Creative differences...

I had all these ideas for different pieces of art using some of my favorite quotes but I am not sure I like that idea any more. I really like the first one, JFK 10-08, but I’m not really happy with the second one I finished yesterday, Gandhi 10-08. Oh well, I have a habit of hating everything I do and then about a week later loving it. I think art is just like that.

I have a bunch of ideas right now though so I am pretty stoked. I’m just gonna step away from this project and who knows? Maybe one day I’ll actually come back to it.

Holden's artistic touches

Holden is finally at the age where we can actually do things that are fun for both of us to do together vs. the random carpet lint of which he found hours on end of entertainment previously.

Yesterday we were painting together, which so far has to be my favorite thing we do. (I especially like it when I walk away and he decides my painting wouldn’t be complete with out a few splashes of every color within reach.)

It was nice to do something together too because even though we live in the same house, I am pretty sure we’re on different planets. I don’t know how it is with other parents but it sometimes feels like we are living parallel to one another without actually touching. Don’t get me wrong, I am totally OK with that. I need personal time and my selfishness for something that resembles my own life did not fall out with the placenta, but it was nice none the less.

I also want to see if Holden is old enough to go to the Children’s Theater. It says ages two and up but I have never tried to put him in a situation where he has had to sit for long periods of time and I’m not sure I can handle the stress of making him. So tonight I’m going to go with some friends to check it out. Hopefully it’s something we can do as a family and if not, well I am pretty sure I will have found something fun to do.

Confessions of A Book Whore

I don’t believe in New Years resolutions. I never have. To me it’s just some ridiculous crap we make up in order to force ourselves to think optimistically about the next 365 days we are going to waste on the daily grind. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s a good idea to have goals and look to the future, I just don’t need some arbitrary day like New Years Eve to provide an opening. I tend to just think of what I want to get done or try throughout the year and this year I did actually set a few goals for myself. I am proud to say I actually finished one of them. (Did you get the urge to shout overachiever? I know I did…)
I wanted to read at least 50 books. That’s one a week with room for laziness and I am almost ashamed to say that I will break and maybe exceed 200 by time the year is out. My friends like to joke that I need to go to Reader Anonymous meetings or pick up a more controllable habit, like drinking, and I am starting to see their point. I can easily read a book in a day and have even finished two a few times. I keep detailed lists of books to buy, books to check out, books read, and upcoming releases. It has literally become another person in my life. Now the reason I feel like I can say this finally is because the urge has started to wane. I have finally been able to start some of my other hobbies again I am glad for the breather.
I have actually started two new projects. The first is paintings incorporating some of my favorite quotes. I figure I can’t go wrong pilfering some genius. The second is mixed media collages of my friends as fairy tale characters. Not gonna lie, it’s pretty awesome.

I still have a few more to do but I am happy with the way they have turned out so far. I tried to include some inside jokes with some of the pictures, like Mike having a sword and Tyler a hose. Hopefully everyone likes them. (Well, at least the few people whose opinion I actually give a damn about.)
So don’t fret imaginary book world, I will be back. And maybe by then I will have learned a little self control. I highly doubt it, but what's life without self delusions?
BORING…
